How omega-3 fatty acids prevent aging

According to a US study, omega-3 fatty acids slow down the aging process of the cells in the human body. For example, omega-3 fatty acids are found in fish and are ingested with food. The long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids are said to promote the growth of so-called telomeres, which consume and shorten with age.

Omega-3 fatty acids extend the lifespan of healthy cells
Omega-3 fatty acids are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that, according to Professor Janice Kiecolt-Glaser from Ohio State University and her team, are supposed to stop natural aging. According to the study results, the fatty acids promote the growth of so-called telomeres. The cell components shorten and consume during the permanent cell division, which they are responsible for controlling. In addition, the telomeres prevent the development of cancer-causing changes on the chromosomes. As soon as the telomeres are completely used up, the cell dies the pre-programmed cell death. According to the study, omega-3 fatty acids are said to keep the cell components longer and thus ensure an extended lifespan for healthy cells.

Omega-3 fatty acids promote health
For a long time, fish was considered an essential part of a healthy diet, especially due to its high proportion of high-quality protein (15 to 20 percent) and the various minerals and vitamins it contains. For example, many fish contain vitamins D and B12, potassium, zinc, fluorine and iodine. The proportion of iodine is particularly high in sea fish. For some time now, the health-promoting effect of the high proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acids, such as omega-3 fatty acids, has become a focus of interest. Omega-3 fatty acids are also said to reduce the risk of certain diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. (ag)
